New York Representative Peter King Fights For Federal Online Gambling

The lure of billions of dollars is just too much for individual U.S. states to ignore. The last 18 months have been fascinating to monitor from the outside as lone states have been forced to take the initiative and introduce their own legislation for regulating online gambling. While this has been successful for states like Nevada and New Jersey the uncertainty and confusion on a nationwide basis has led to many to call for federal intervention.

While many are wary of government intervention the national implementation of an online gambling bill will go a long way in protecting both consumers and operators and would prevent problems like underage gambling and shady establishments.

The stakes are high and conservative estimates are that online gambling could generate over $10 billion in revenues by 2017 according to the American Gaming Association. According the AGA there is currently a whopping $4 billion being lost to illegal sites. Anyone connected to online gambling knows that these figures are lower than the real money being lost.

Many bills have being brought before Congress before to try and put things in order in this multi-billion dollar industry but have largely failed. The latest attempt was brought by Representative of New York Peter King who is looking to build on the current momentum in the U.S. There is no doubt that the taboo of online gambling has been largely removed and it is becoming more and more acceptable as a legitimate form of online entertainment.

King summed up his intentions with the proposed legislation,” A common federal standard will ensure strong protections for consumers, protect against problem and underage gambling, and make it easier for businesses, players, lawmakers, and regulators to navigate and freely participate.”

The tide has definitely shifted towards embracing or accepting online gambling as an established reality. The only question is how long It will take for lawmakers on a national level to provide a safe and controlled environment where everyone benefits from a sensible and fair playing field for all to enjoy.
